6 Warning Signs You Might Need a New Roof
While we are always thankful to have a roof over our heads, we sometimes get so busy that we forget to check on the condition that our roof is in. Our roofs play a very important role in protecting us from inclement weather damage and keeping our home well insulated from extreme temperatures. Since our roofs withstand a lot of damage over time from rain, snow, wind, etc., it is important to give it a thorough inspection on occasion. Here are some of the warning signs to look for when inspecting your roof:
- Missing, Cracked, or Curling Shingles: The shingles are the foundation of any roof. Over time, excessive wear and tear from the elements can cause them to begin to fall off, curl up at the ends, and crack. This is a common issue and some of it can be fixed without the necessity of building a new roof entirely. However, if your roof is beginning to have shingles that fit the description it is imperative to get it looked at to ensure its condition does not go from bad to worse.
- Roof is Rotting or has a Buildup of Algae: Rotting on roofs is not uncommon, but it is a telltale sign that your roof may need to be replaced. Rot and algae growth on roofs can become a bit of a problem if not taken care of in a timely manner. This mainly occurs with roofs made up of asphalt. The rotting/algae is created from a buildup of moisture and lack of sunlight. Sometimes, you can get rid of it on your own by giving your roof a deep cleaning; however, if the problem is too far gone and it has begun to affect the inside of your home, getting a new roof may be the best solution.
- Leaks: If water begins to leak into your home after a heavy rainfall or a significant snow melt, this is a warning sign you’re dealing with damage somewhere in your roof. Often times, leaks occur in the attic or through your ceiling. Leaks can lead to bigger issues like water stains, mold or mildew, or potentially a full-blown roof collapse. To avoid these larger issues, you must carefully examine any leaks and inspect your roof to find the root of the problem. In most cases, replacing the area that is damaged will suffice. However, if you are unsure you can always seek out a professional opinion.
- Outdated: The lifespan of a roof is about 20 - 30 years, so whether you are just moving into your home or have been settled for a while it is a good idea to see just how old your roof may be. In most cases, some maintenance can help to return the roof to the condition it once was. If your roof is reaching its end, little warning signs may begin to appear so be on the lookout. To avoid it altogether you can always call a professional to conduct an inspection.
- Increase in Heat/Cool Bill: Although it may seem bizarre to think of if you start to see an increase in your heating and cooling bill it could be an indication that your roof needs some work. If your roof is damaged it can cause your home to work harder to keep it cool or warm it up.
- Dark Patches: If you notice dark patches or areas forming on your roof, this is another indication it may be time to invest in a new roof. These dark spots can tie into numerous things, such as older shingles causing the granules on the shingles to fall off. It could also be from the growth of algae which will need to be removed quickly.
It is always a good idea to have your roof inspected if you are unsure about the condition your roof is in. Also, it is often dangerous to do these tasks on your own, so please be advised to take extra precaution or to seek out a licensed professional if you feel uncomfortable working from your roof.
